On the trail to self-reliance
When Jennifer Knowles came to Goodwill, she was thrilled to find out that having cerebral palsy wouldn't keep her from her dream of earning a paycheck. At age 23, Jennifer had computer skills and had volunteered for various organizations, but she had never held a paying job. That soon changed. She started by doing data entry as part of the Ocala Goodwill training program, using a keyboard overlay that allows her to type despite her disability. Then she took on added duties, learning to create spreadsheets, scheduling assignments for program participants and serving as receptionist at the training center. Her work was so impressive that she was hired as an office assistant at the Goodwill facility.
Jennifer's self-confidence has blossomed along with her employment skills. In fact, she was appointed to serve on the Family Care Council Florida to help other people with disabilities learn how they too can follow their dreams.
Goodwill salutes this young woman whose can-do attitude is an inspiration to others. |
